Hotels are commonly thought of as the height of luxury, and it’s not without reason. Hotel pillows are some of the most comfortable pillows you’ll ever sleep on, but what makes them that way?

There are several factors – what materials are used, what type it is – that determine the quality of a pillow.

What is a Hotel pillow?

First of all, we need a definition of a hotel pillow. A hotel pillow is any type of bedding that you find in a hotel or motel or other such b & b establishment. Among the most helpful things for you, as a new customer, is that they tend to provide more than one type of pillow. This gives you the chance to choose the one which fits you best! So, I will review the different types of pillows which are most often found in hotels and other such facilities. It is my hope that these reviews will help you to find a pillow that truly works for you.

Buyers guide to the Standard Hotel Pillow

Everyone sleeps in a different way. This means that you need to ensure that people with the same sleeping position are satisfied with their pillows. I recommend that you try out a few types of pillow if possible and if they don’t work out for you then find a new pillow.

Everyone has a different preference when it comes to pillows. Some people prefer a soft pillow, while others like firm. What your neck and head need is going to depend on your height, weight, and body type. The sheets are also an important factor as cotton sheets tend to be more resilient than polyester ones (especially in the winter). A good way to go about finding the perfect pillow for you is just heading into a store and trying out all of them. But if you’re not near any stores or you want some guidance before buying online, this article will tell you all about the types of pillows that are on offer and which one might work best for you.

What kind of shape are you?

There are pillow shapes for several different needs. If you have a very skinny neck, then you will need a pillow with more ‘give’ or volume to it to stop your head from sinking into it. If you sleep on your neck, you’ll need more pillows to properly support your head and neck.

You will get more benefit from a memory foam pillow, for example, if you have a thinner neck shape. This is because memory foam moulds to the shape of your head and neck and provides support in all the right places. If you need a firmer pillow, then consider going for memory foam.

Another way to determine what shapes suits you best is to find out if your head is thicker or thinner than average. Once you have the right pillow for your particular shape you can adjust to suit your sleeping position.

Back sleepers

The back sleeper tends to need a little less padding than the side or front sleeper but still needs good support and good height. I would recommend at least 4 inches in height for any back sleeper. If you tend to sleep on your back, then you’ll probably want a firmer pillow to keep your head in alignment with your spine.

Side sleepers

Side sleepers tend to need the most support of all the 3 positions and therefore will want a pillow which is very thick and high, up to 7 inches. Many people also find that their arms are left numb by sleeping on their side and will need extra support for that arm. Front sleepers: are usually the slowest to get out of bed in the morning!

You will need a softer pillow for this reason. The important thing is that you don’t want anything too fluffy as this may get tangled up with your head and cause you to move around in bed. The ideal hotel pillow should have a bit of give but not too much (so the pillow doesn’t lose shape as you sleep).

Front sleepers

These people need only a soft pillow to sleep on, but the next section suggests a little more information.

The person who sleeps on their front will need a thicker and more supportive pillow. A good rule of thumb is that front sleepers will tend to prefer pillows which are around 6 inches thick and up to 7 inches tall and firm. This height is easy to adjust by moving the pillow around. The hotel pillow should have a good amount of fill so you can move it around at will and still get some decent head support!

Types of Pillows Used in Major Hotels

There are three main types of pillows used in hotels – feather down, a down blend, or a down alternative. Feather down is usually goose or duck and is more common in expensive hotels because of its flexibility (feather pillows can range in firmness) and comfort.

Feather down pillows are popular among customers, but down blend pillows are cheaper for hotels and still comfortable. Down blend pillows include a mixture of feather and down, and the ratio of these depends on the pillow.

This can range from a 50/50 split, to 15/85, to 5/95 down-to-feather. The last variety, down alternatives, uses synthetic material to replicate the fibers of natural down. Down alternative pillows don’t last as long, but they are cheaper and heavier.

Which of these do popular pillows hotels use?

Marriott’s self-named pillow (sold on their website) is a mix of down and down alternatives (which is environmentally sustainable).

The Hilton, on the other hand, uses down blend pillows that have two “chambers.” The inner chamber is stuffed with feathers to provide support, while the outer chamber is filled with down.

The Ritz-Carlton’s website features its own self-named pillow, this time a mix of all three – feathers, down, and an alternative form of down called Lycoll fiber.

Why Are These Hotel Pillows so Comfortable?

This doesn’t quite answer the question – why are these pillows so comfortable?

It all comes down to the materials. Feather stuffing is pretty self-explanatory, but what is down? What are the down alternatives made of?

Down is plucked from birds (geese or ducks) similar to feathers, but it is the soft material found underneath the protective feather cover. Often, down is considered one of the best materials to stuff pillows with. It is light, airy, and soft, yet still supportive.

Down alternative, on the other hand, is a man-made synthetic fiber, meant to mimic the same comfort that down gives.  Down alternative is hypoallergenic and because it’s not as light as natural down, pillows made with down alternative tend to be heavier.

Heavier bedding, depending on the user’s preferences, can be preferable. Lots of people enjoy the extra weight and go to sleep easier with it.

The common factor is that all these materials provide the utmost comfort, each in its own way. Whether there is a preference for a firm, soft, or supportive pillow, there will always be a material that can provide it.

The firmness, material, and type of pillow all affect the comfort of sleep, as well as sustainability and cost. Pillows are an often overlooked part of a hotel stay but can make all the difference. Hotels may range in quality, but if you know what kind of pillows they offer then you will always have a good night’s sleep.

I hope you’ve found this article helpful and once you pick from one of the pillows I’ve reviewed, I know that you’ll have a great night’s sleep!
